Centrica and Energy Capital Partners have acquired the Isle of Grain LNG terminal in the UK from National Grid for GBP 1.5 billion, the company said on Thursday.
The terminal provides LNG import, export, regasification and gas storage services vital to the UK’s energy system and is fully contracted until 2029, with over 70% capacity secured until 2038 and more than 50% until 2045.
Centrica will invest around GBP 200 million, backed by non-recourse project financing totalling around GBP 1.1 billion.
Centrica expects an annual EBITDA contribution of around GBP 100 million from the deal, with average annual cash distributions of about GBP 20 million from 2026 to 2028. Future development options include combined heat and power, hydrogen, ammonia and bunkering facilities.
“The Isle of Grain terminal is a strategic asset that will support the UK’s energy security for many decades to come,” Centrica group chief executive Chris O’Shea said.
Energy Capital Partners, part of Bridgepoint Group, is one of the largest private owners of natural gas infrastructure assets in the US. The company cited growing demand for reliable natural gas supply in the UK and Europe as a key driver for the acquisition.
Centrica is an integrated energy company based in the UK, operating across electricity and gas supply, services and trading. Its strategy focuses on regulated and contracted assets supporting the energy transition. It also holds a 20% stake in the Sizewell C nuclear project.
